Manitoba Opera gets us in the the mood for their spring 2020 production of Bizet's Carmen with a free film screening of Carmen Jones
The story of the beautiful and independent Carmen and the Spanish cavalry officer Don José is translated into a modern-day story about a parachute factory worker and a pilot, and set in America in the mid 20th Century. Groundbreaking at its release for its use of an all-black cast, this 1954 operatic film stars Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte, and features the vocal talents of Marilyn Horne and LeVern Hutcherson. The music is all from Bizet’s famous opera, with English lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Run time is 1 hour and 45 minutes.
