Contemporary composer and naturalist John Luther Adams recently composed a monumental trilogy devoted to ocean, river and desert, exploring the environment with a sense of reverence and awe. The tradition of honouring nature in music goes back centuries. Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms needed walks in the woods in order to compose. Beethoven’s 6th symphony, the Pastoral, is his ode to the beauty of the great outdoors. Mahler’s first symphony evokes a primordial awakening of nature, while his 3rd is like a hymn to love and the natural world. Claude Debussy conjures the raging sea in his famous symphonic work La Mer; and Edvard Grieg found endless musical inspiration looking out of his cottage window overlooking a Norwegian fjord.

This two-week course will be part of an ongoing occasional series. We’ll explore classical music through the ages connected with various aspects of the environment, we’ll discuss how nature inspired the composers, and of course, we’ll listen to a wide range of evocative music.
